Notapub turns what's on your mind into a way to reach the right person
for it: the stranger a block away who has already solved the problem
you're stuck on, someone who'll push back on a half-formed idea at
2am, the people in a new city who care about the same obscure things
you do, a person who has actually been through what you're facing.
You write or say what's on your mind, and Notapub quietly surfaces the
few people it's relevant to. No feeds, no likes, no followers. This
page explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, who can see
it, how long we keep it, and how to take it all back.
The short version
-
You're in control of what you share. Contacts,
location, nearby-device sensing, the microphone, and notifications
are all optional. The app asks first, and you can say no and still
use Notapub.
-
We don't sell your data. Not to advertisers, not
to data brokers, not to anyone. There are no advertising trackers
in the app.
-
Other people don't see your private details. Your
phone number, your email, your contacts, and the things you've
written privately stay private. People find you through shared
interests, not your identity.
-
We don't use your photos or camera. Notapub
doesn't access your photo library or take pictures. There is no
public profile and no public photos.
-
You can leave clean. Delete your account and we
delete what we hold about you.
What we collect, and why
Your phone number
-
We use your phone number to create your account, to sign you back
in, and to confirm it's really you. It's the identity tied to your
account.
-
Your phone number is never shown to other users.
Your email address (only if you use email sign-in)
-
If you choose the email option to sign in instead of your phone
number, we collect your email address and use it to create your
account and let you back in.
-
Your email is never shown to other users.
What you write and share in the app
-
You tell Notapub a little about yourself, what you're interested
in, and the kinds of things you'd like to talk about, in your own
words. We use what you share to surface the handful of people it's
actually relevant to: someone who can help, someone chasing the
same idea, someone who has been where you are.
-
We also collect the notes and messages you send to other people
through the app, so we can deliver them and keep your conversations
working.
-
You can review and update what you've shared from inside the app at
any time.
Your contacts (only with your permission)
-
Sharing your contacts is optional. The first time the app offers
it, we explain what it's for, and you can decline, Notapub works
fine without it.
-
If you allow it, we check your contacts against people who use
Notapub so we can help you find people you may already know. We
don't use your contacts for anything else.
-
Your contacts are never shown to other users, and
we never sell or share them with advertisers or anyone else.
-
You can turn off contacts access at any time in your device
settings, and deleting your account removes what we hold about your
contacts.
Your approximate location (only with your permission)
-
If you turn it on, we use your approximate location to help you
find people near you. The app asks for permission first,
and you can use Notapub without sharing location at all.
-
With your permission, Notapub can check your approximate location
in the background, even when the app isn't open, so
it can notice when relevant people are near you in the moment. We
use it only to surface nearby people and let nearby people find you,
never to track where you go or keep a history of your movements,
and other users never see your exact whereabouts. You can turn it
off whenever you like.
-
You can turn location off whenever you like, in your device
settings.
Nearby-device signals (only with your permission)
-
With your permission, Notapub can use your device's nearby-device
sensing to notice when other people who use the app are physically
close to you, including in the background, even when the app is
closed, so you don't miss someone relevant nearby in the moment.
-
This is optional, you're asked first, and you can turn it off at
any time in your device settings.
Voice and microphone recordings (when you use the Call feature)
-
Notapub has a voice / Call feature. When you use it, the app uses
your microphone and records your voice so the
feature can work.
-
A copy of a voice recording may be stored on your
account. We keep it to provide and improve the feature, and you can
ask us to delete it (see Your choices and rights below).
-
The microphone is only used when you choose to use the Call
feature, and you can turn off microphone access at any time in your
device settings.
Usage and device information
-
Like most apps, Notapub collects information about how you use it,
such as the screens you visit and actions you take, along with your
device type, operating system version, app version, and your
language and region.
-
We use this to keep the app running, fix problems, and make it
better, not to build an advertising profile of you.
Diagnostic and crash data
-
When something goes wrong, the app sends us error and performance
reports so we can find and fix bugs and keep Notapub stable.
Interaction and session analytics
-
We use analytics and diagnostics providers to help us understand
how people use Notapub so we can improve it. This can include
recordings of in-app interactions and session activity, how
screens and features are used during a visit.
-
We use this to understand and improve the experience, not to sell
your data or target ads.
Notifications (only if you allow them)
-
If you allow notifications, we collect what's needed to send them
to your device and let you know when someone has reached out, so
you know to open the app. The notification itself doesn't reveal
private content.
-
You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
Feedback you send us
-
If you use the in-app feedback option, we collect what you write,
along with basic device and app details attached automatically, so
we can understand your feedback and follow up.
Your account activity and presence
-
We collect basic activity about your account, such as when you're
active, so features like knowing who's around can work and so we
can keep the app reliable.
What we don't collect
-
Notapub does not access your photos or your camera.
We don't read your photo library and we don't take pictures. There
is no public profile and no public photos on Notapub.
What other people can see about you
When someone comes across you on Notapub, they see a brief sense of
who you are and what you're interested in, based on what you've
chosen to share, and, only if you've turned on location, a rough idea
of your general area (like a city or neighborhood).
They never see your phone number, your email, your
contacts, your exact location, your voice recordings, or anything
you've entered privately. There's no public profile to comb through.
How we use what you share
Everything we collect goes toward a single purpose: putting what's on
your mind in front of the few people it's relevant to: someone who
can help, build on it, or has been there. Specifically, we use your
information to:
- create your account, sign you in, and keep it secure;
- surface the people your words are relevant to, and help them find you;
- help you find people you may already know, if you share contacts;
- show people near you, if you share location or turn on nearby-device sensing;
- let you send and receive notes, messages, and voice conversations;
- let you know when someone has reached out, if you allow notifications;
- understand how Notapub is used, fix problems, and improve the experience;
- review and act on the feedback you send us;
- protect against fraud, abuse, and misuse, and meet our legal obligations.
We don't use your information to serve you ads or to sell to anyone.
Who we share data with
We keep your circle small. We share data only in these limited ways:
-
Service providers who run Notapub for us. We rely
on trusted service providers to host the app, store data securely,
send sign-in and verification messages, deliver notifications,
power the voice / Call feature, and provide analytics and
diagnostics. They may only handle your data to provide those
services to us, and they're bound by contract to protect it.
-
Other Notapub users. Only the limited information
described in "What other people can see about you" above,
and the notes, messages, and conversations you choose to send them.
-
If the law requires it, or to keep people safe. We
may disclose information if we're legally compelled to, or to
protect the safety, rights, or property of our users, the public,
or Notapub.
-
If our business changes hands. If Notapub is ever
involved in a merger or acquisition, your data may transfer as part
of that, and this policy will continue to apply to it.
We do not sell or rent your personal data, and we
don't share it with advertisers.
Where your data is processed
Notapub relies on service providers that may process and store your
data in countries other than your own, including the United States.
Wherever your data is handled, we take steps to make sure it's
protected in line with this policy and applicable law.
How long we keep it
-
Account information and what you've shared: kept
while your account is active, or until you remove it.
-
Notes, messages, and conversations: kept while
your account exists so your conversations stay available, and
removed when you delete your account.
-
Voice recordings: kept to provide and improve the
Call feature while your account exists, and removed when you delete
your account or ask us to delete them.
-
Contacts, location, and nearby-device data: kept
only while the relevant feature is turned on and your account
exists; removed when you turn the feature off or delete your
account.
-
Diagnostic, analytics, and technical logs: kept
for a limited period to help us understand usage and fix problems.
-
Backups: kept on a short rolling basis, then
overwritten.
We may keep some information longer where the law requires it, or to
resolve disputes and enforce our agreements.
Your choices and rights
You're in the driver's seat. At any time you can:
-
Edit or remove what you've shared, most of it is
adjustable right in the app;
-
Turn permissions on or off, contacts, location,
nearby-device sensing, the microphone, and notifications can all be
changed in your device settings;
-
Ask us to delete your voice recordings by emailing
us;
-
Delete your account and the data associated with
it, see delete account.
Depending on where you live, including the EU/UK (GDPR) and California
(CCPA/CPRA), you also have the right to:
- Access a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- Correct data that's inaccurate or out of date;
- Delete your data;
- Receive a portable copy of your data in a machine-readable format;
-
Opt out of any "sale" or "sharing" of personal
data, there's nothing to opt out of, since we do neither, but the
right is yours;
-
Lodge a complaint with your local data protection
authority if you think we've mishandled your data.
To exercise any of these, email
privacy@notapub.com and we'll
take care of it. We won't discriminate against you for exercising your
rights.
Permissions, and how to turn them off
Notapub asks for a few device permissions, and each one is optional.
You can grant or revoke any of them at any time in your device
settings:
- Location, including in the background, to show people near you;
- Contacts, to help you find people you may already know;
- Microphone, used only for the voice / Call feature;
- Nearby-device sensing, to notice when other users are physically near you;
- Notifications, to let you know when someone has reached out.
Turning a permission off stops that feature from using the related
information going forward; deleting your account removes what we hold.
Younger users
You must be at least 13 years old to use Notapub. The app asks your
age before you can join. Notapub is not directed to children under
13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them; if
we learn that someone under 13 has created an account, we'll remove
it promptly. Some content and features are limited for users under
18. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information,
please contact
privacy@notapub.com.
Security
We take protecting your data seriously. Information traveling between
the app and our servers is encrypted in transit, and the data we store
is encrypted at rest. We limit access so that your information is only
used to provide Notapub to you. No system is perfectly secure, but we
work to keep yours safe and to respond quickly if something goes wrong.
Changes to this policy
If we make meaningful changes, we'll update the Last updated
date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the app. Your
continued use of Notapub after a change means you accept the updated
policy.
